The peoples of the continent and the three kingdoms.

The Regency of Hwaryeong

Order. A state of clerks and Lawscribes, ruled from the western fortress city of Baekgaem. Its rivers never flood and its roads are safe, because the Lawscribes write small commands with shard jade. Everyone is in the ledger: Kıymıklı go into the Shard Ledger the day they are born. A Kıymıklı has two roads: the Legion or the Shard Divan. Starting village: Dalmok.

The Throne of Geumseong

Legitimacy. The deltas, rice terraces and ancestor temples of the south. The ancestors speak from the temple walls; the Listening priestesses hear them. For three hundred years it has waited for an heir of Mon's line to be crowned: no heir is crowned, and their title is "the Waiting Throne". Kıymıklı are taken into the temples, the best of them into the Temple Wardens. Starting village: Nokwon Terraces.

The Free Hordes of Cheongun

Freedom. The clans of the steppe and the free cities of the coast. There is no throne; decisions are made in the Kurultai. Shamans speak with the spirits again; clans bargain with the spirits of streams and rivers. The Chainbreakers, who break shards and set the spirits free, come from here. But every bargain has its price. Starting village: Ak Toy Camp.

Other peoples

The Stonekin
A people with bodies of stone living inside the western mountains. Since the Mountain Revolt they hold the high valleys and are hostile to every traveller coming down to the plain. Their greatest clan is Ghorvesk.
The mountain clans
The human clans of the western mountains. They mourn before going down into a jade vein.
The sand nomads
The people of the Sand Sea, the old bed of the White River.
The coast cities and the Islanders
The harbours of the eastern coast and the islands in the sea. They always speak softly to the sea.

The Kıymıklı

People born from fifteen years after the Breaking on, carrying a green mark on their body, a splinter. They sense shards, hear the spirits' pain, and when they die they return; but when they return they forget small things. Every kingdom sees them differently. You are one of them.

The iye

The spirit of every place. The bound ones are half asleep; those left half bound beside the shards suffer and drive the animals around them mad. The dead who lost their way at the Breaking are called the Unreturned.
